A barber shop owner oversees the daily activities of a barber shop. The majority of barber shop owners are also licensed barbers, and they often provide services to customers who frequent their shop. Barber shops typically offer grooming services to men and boys, which include hair cuts and facial shaving. An owner of a barber shop must also manage the barbers that he employees, market and advertise his shop, and take care of administrative duties such as paying taxes and keeping track of expenses.

It is difficult to calculate the average salary of a barber shop owner. A number of factors can affect his annual compensation, including how busy the shop is, where it is located, how many barbers are employed there, and the amount of overhead costs the shop incurs each year. Whether or not the owner is also a barber in his shop also plays into the salary that he earns. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics the average annual salary of a barber is $27,930. Owners of a barber shop also usually collect commissions from the barbers that they shop employs. In many cases the commission is 20% of the total that clients pay a barber for services. After overhead costs are paid, these commissions become a part of the owner’s salary.

Barber Shop Owner Responsibilities

The owner of a barber shop is responsible for all aspects of running his business. Many owners of this type of business choose to be hands-on, and spend their work week in the shop, but some may choose to delegate some responsibilities to a manager. The owner typically works to market and advertise his barber shop to attract new customers while retaining loyal customers. Administrative duties, such as paying bills, bookkeeping, and paying taxes are also the owner’s responsibility. The owner also over-sees the people that he employees to ensure that they are following the policies and procedures of the shop. If the owner is also a barber in his shop he is responsible for providing grooming services to his customers.

Barber Shop Owner Requirements

It is useful for a barber shop owner to have some training in business management. This may include obtaining a degree from a university, or taking classes in running a business. Before opening a barber shop, the owner must file for all business licenses required by the city and state that he is doing business in. If the owner is also a barber he is required to attend barbering school and become a licensed barber.
